A noun (or pronoun) can be the subject, direct object or indirect object of a verb, or the object of a preposition.
The subject is the doer of a sentence or clause.
John went to the store. (John is the subject.)
The building is 40 stories tall. (Building is the subject.)
The direct object is what is acted upon.
Joan bought an apple. (Apple is the object.)
The indirect object is the noun to whom or to which something is given or done.
Joan gave John the apple. or Joan gave the apple to John. (John is the indirect object. In the second example John is also the object of the preposition to.)
